What is SPD?

A lot of people have been asking me what SPD is. And honestly, I can't even explain it yet. I know what my child does, but I have not learned why she does it, yet. OT will teach me and her all of this. We will learn how to work with what she does and get her to be able to control it better. I will learn how to handle her issues better and to assist with them instead of trying to make her stop what she is doing.

We all have sensory issues to some point. Some just have more significant issues then most and need help dealing with those issues. From what I have gathered, Sevi has an impulse issue and a feeling issue. The feeling issue is where the climbing and jumping come into play. Something about needing to feel the jolt through her body, etc. She has to touch everything, put everything in her mouth, and so on. And then she has something that I am not sure what it is yet, but about needing to make messes. Needing to throw everything around her. Again, to feel everything (ie, diaper cream, toothpaste, all those things she has emptied throughout the house). And the impulse issue brings us back to the coloring on the walls, emptying the diaper cream, toothpaste, etc. She can not control her impulses. Her need to wear layers, tight fitting clothes, all falls somewhere in here as well. There is something else, but it is escaping me at the moment. I will remember it later and post. I am sure I will be posting a lot about all of this as I learn.

Anyway, here are some websites with more info.

    Jamie,

My oldest daughter has SPD. It peaked at age 5, but has been present since birth. We did some pretty heavy duty OT, which did help. She is still affected at age 11, but she has learned many ways to cope. I hope your OT goes well and she gets the help she needs.
